KENNEDY, JOHN F. Typescript, unsigned with holograph annotations throughout, reading copy of the speech he delivered in Harrisburg, PA,

"IT IS UP TO OUR GENERATION . . . TO CHECK THE ADVANCE OF COMMUNISM" KENNEDY, JOHN F. Typescript, unsigned with holograph annotations throughout, reading copy of the speech he delivered in Harrisburg, PA, on September 15, 1960, beginning: "The challenge that faces this generation of Americans is as great as any generation has ever faced." Over 200 holograph words, mostly single words or short phrases written between printed lines, including 15 lines on blank verso of terminal page probably being early notes for the speech he delivered on the 29th in Syracuse at a fund-raising dinner. 13 pages, 4to, printed on rectos only of loose sheets; minor scattered staining with paperclip stain to upper left edge of fist page, minor edge tears to first page, vertical crease. Np, circa 15 September 1960

  • Notes: In the left margin of the first page is written "FDR," and in the lower margin of that page are phrases Kennedy used in other speeches during the campaign, but which do not appear in the published version of the Harrisburg speech: "This is a great country--but it can be greater / This is a powerful country--but it can be more / powerful." On the third page is noted, "Wilson / FDR / Truman," beside a paragraph mentioning the Good Neighbor policy of FDR. On the 6th page is written, "The Republicans / Stand pat with McKinley," above a deleted paragraph about Republicans denying the need for government to alleviate unemployment. On page 12, the names of Lincoln and Thomas Paine are written in the lower margin, near a characterization of America as a beacon of hope.
The notes for the Syracuse speech, beginning: "I am honored to be here tonight. I have never doubted that I would not have been the Democratic nominee, if it had not been for the . . . support that you . . . gave me at the convention."
