KEROUAC, JACK. Typed Letter Signed, "Ti Jean," in pencil, to Paul Bourgeois ("Dear MoonCloud"),

"THE MOST INTERESTING THING I'VE HEARD IN ALL MY LIFE ABOUT MY OWN RACE" KEROUAC, JACK. Typed Letter Signed, "Ti Jean," in pencil, to Paul Bourgeois ("Dear MoonCloud"), mentioning a plan to visit Lowell [MA] in the winter, asking about Bourgeois's plans, noting that he has been researching the Iroquois in Alberta, asking for more information about a "secret" connected to Bourgeois's father, stating that Bourgeois reminds him of his boyhood, suggesting that Kerouac could encourage the UN to provide aid to his people, stating his intention to move to Long Island, and asking Bourgeois to have a drink for him in a list of bars including SAC Club in Lowell. Additionally inscribed with a holograph date at upper right and the addition of a few diacritical marks at one French passage, in pencil. 1 page, 4to; folds. With the original envelope. [Orlando], 25 October 1962

  • Notes: ". . . I've been reading up a lot in my encyclopedia (apropos d'les Iroquois) and found 'Michel's Band' in Alberta . . . . I would really love it if you'd tell me . . . more about everything but you keep saying it should be secret . . . . All I know is, if all you say is true (and my mother says you told her the last morning it was all just 'stories' you made up) it's the most interesting thing I've heard in all my life about my own race . . . a diminishing race at that.
". . . [Y]ou reminded me of the old days with my boyhood friends, like Michel Fournier of Salem Street and many others. . . . I'm proud of my own kind of people and I always felt good in your company . . . . I never felt very much at hom[e] with Americans and now maybe I'll know why.
". . . [I]f what you say is straight, it will be very easy someday . . . to get the UN to supply them with fuel, food, clothes, helicopters, just like they do for the Negro new nations of Africa. . . . A nation is a nation no matter how small. . . .
"All kinds of things . . . that would improve health and comfort and not make you so dependant on just fish and game, see? . . . All that could happen if . . . your people wanted: and they probably dont. . . .
"I have lots of important friends who have even more important friends who could easily get this aid done in a few years thru regular United Nations and Care channels. But maybe that would be spoiling everything. . . .
"I'm asking Marty to drive me again, soon, from Florida to Long Island to a new home. I hope he can make it. . . . Moi pi ma Mêre et les chats, tu sais.
"I hope to meet your Ma next time. Écrit un ti mot. Mes regards a Gérard Gauthier . . . .
"How's Huck the Cat? Tell Chief send my tape, he didn't yet. Have one for me at Le Club Passtemps and in SAC's and the Moody Tavern and Chuck's."
