KIMBEI, KUSAKABE (1841-1934)
Beautiful album containing 50 views of Japan, including lush landscapes and agricultural views, studies of gardens and temples, geishas, and other detailed occupationals. Richly hand-colored mounted albumen prints, each approximately 8x10 1/2 inches (20.3x26.7 cm.), and the reverse, all with the original tissue guards; with a caption, in English, and an inventory number on many. Oblong folio, black lacquer with inlaid ivory and pearl depicting a marsh landscape with elegantly-rendered birds and insects highlighted in gilt; gilt-lettered leather backstrip; with a period note affixed to the front free endpaper; all edges gilt; in the original silk-covered clamshell box, lightly worn and top detached. Circa 1890

  • Notes: Although Kimbei's hand stamp does not appear in this album, each of the photographer's captions and inventory numbers correspond to his catalogue. A notation on the front free endpaper reads: "From Japanese Bazaar around 1895, Unitarian Church Fall River, Articles brought from Japan by Rev. Arthur May Knapp, pastor at that time." Knapp was sent to Japan 1887 by the American Unitarian Association.
