Notes: Kusakabe Kimbei was initially employed by Felix Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried as a photographic colorist and assistant before opening his own workshop in Yokohama, in 1881. His accomplished photographs show a sensitivity to Japanese cultural life that is, perhaps, best reflected in his intimate portraits.
