KIMBEI, KUSAKABE (1841-1934)
Beautiful Japanese lacquer album with 50 hand-colored photographs, comprising 22 remarkable portraits of tradesmen, geishas, samurai and other people as well as 28 views of Yokohama, Tokyo and Nikko, several depicting bustling street scenes. Hand-colored albumen prints, 8x10 1/4 inches (20.3x26.0 cm.), mounted; each with a caption and inventory number in the negative. Oblong folio, pictorial black lacquer boards with ivory and gilt inlay, with Kimbei's hand stamp on the front pastedown; all edges gilt; housed in the original silk box (defective). Circa 1890

  • Notes: Kusakabe Kimbei was initially employed by Felix Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried as a photographic colorist and assistant before opening his own workshop in Yokohama, in 1881. His accomplished photographs show a sensitivity to Japanese cultural life that is, perhaps, best reflected in his intimate portraits.
