(KING, MARTIN LUTHER.) Union Justice Now! Poster, 21 1/2 x 14 inches; worn with a heavy horizontal crease and 1-inch puncture (apparently where previously mounted on a stick). Memphis, TN, [April 1968]

  • Notes: Martin Luther King''s final public appearance was at a 3 April 1968 rally for the black sanitation workers of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in Memphis. The participants carried two printed signs: the iconic "I Am a Man," and "Union Justice Now!" On 8 April, both signs appeared at the rally to commemorate King, along with one reading "Honor King: End Racism!" This "Union Justice Now!" sign bears indications of use at one or both of these historic events, and serves as a reminder that Dr. King died while supporting the rights of union workers. None traced at auction since a Swann sale, 17 February 2000, lot 118.
