(KNIGHTS OF LABOR.) Haskell, Burnette G. Letter mocking Terence Powderly for organizing Chinese-American workers.

(KNIGHTS OF LABOR.) Haskell, Burnette G. Letter mocking Terence Powderly for organizing Chinese-American workers. Autograph Letter Signed, 10 x 7 inches, on pictorial letterhead of his Labor Enquirer, addressed to William E. Taylor of Eureka, CA; slight loss on top edge. Denver, CO, 14 June 1887

  • Notes: Haskell was a founder of the International Workingmen's Association, a violent Socialist group within the Knights of Labor with strong nativist tendencies. He was a bitter enemy of Knights leader Terence Powderly. Here Haskell complains: "A Chinese came into my office from N.Y. to-day and gave me the sign of the K. of L. Powderly & the Home Club organized them in order to 'down' the International Cigarmaker's Union. Nice labor leader he is."
