(KNOW NOTHING PARTY.) True American Freedom, or a Warning to the Churches.

(KNOW NOTHING PARTY.) True American Freedom, or a Warning to the Churches. Illustrated broadside, 13 x 9 inches; folds, minor wear [Boston, circa 1854?]

  • Notes: An unrecorded broadside poem in support of the xenophobic Know Nothing Party. The credit line reads only "Composed in Boston, by the 'Lawrence Poet.'" The 16 verses are awash with anti-Catholic paranoia: "They are ready if the priest gives the word / To put down all our churches with guns and the sword." The author repeatedly refers to Boston's Catholic immigrants as "Greeks," as a euphemism or perhaps as a sign of deep confusion. Lively reading.
