Kruger, Barbara, illus. (b. 1945) & Stephen King (b. 1947)
My Pretty Pony.

New York: Library Fellows of the Whitney Museum of American Art, 1988.

Limited edition, folio; one of 250 unnumbered copies, signed by both Kruger and King in pencil on the limitation; with lithography and handset type by Kruger accompanied by King's story; bound in the publisher's red morocco-backed brushed stainless steel-covered boards with inset digital clock on front board; housed in the original gray cloth clamshell box (timepiece battery is dead, as usually the case, some thumbprints to steel; minor spotting to box); 20 x 13 1/2 in.

In this stunning artist's book, Kruger uses, "three elements in her illustrations: her signature band of words mimicking commercial claims in advertisements, enlarged reproductions of photographs, and a hand holding a digital clock. As the theme of King's story is the perception of the passage of time, the third element recalls that fact and is superimposed upon what seems to be slow-motion representations of horse accidents. Bands of short text, usually two or three words, taken from the text placed on top of the indefinite pictures make direct connections to the story."

Castleman 216.
