"STARCHILD SAVED THE WORLD BY DETONATING THE ORBITAL BOMBS" KUBRICK, STANLEY. Group of 7 letters to physicist Jeremy Bernstein, Signed "Stanley" or "S," most written during the filming of his 2001: A Space Odyssey, on various topics. Each 1/2 page, 4to; condition generally good. Np, 1966-70

  • Notes: ALS: "For someone who doesn't really like the film your piece was very kind. The only bad mistake in it is that in the novel it was A.C. intention that Starchild saved the world by detonating the orbital bombs. One can only presume he had a way of coping with the radioactive debris and the heat. You will note that ending is not one that I subscribed to; principally for it's implications. . . ." 10 August 1968 * Brief ALS, written in the space below Bernstein's letter to him: ". . . Thanks for the Viet Nam piece. It sounds pretty grim. . . . I suppose you saw the Newsweek piece. I dont think it could have been less accurate. At least Arthur sounds dumb this time, "I think there's another world out there, etc." 18 September 1966 * TLS: "The article seems to be a big hit. I've gotten quite a lot of letters from people I haven't heard from, and even from some that I never expected to hear from again, all saying how much they like it. . . ." 28 November 1966 * TLS: ". . . The movie is going very well. I am not sure of the date about coming back to New York. . . ." 8 December 1966 * TLS: ". . . Things like this make you realize how pleasant physical violence must be as a short cut to problem-solving. . . ." 11 February 1967 * Brief TLS: ". . . I should hope from the acknowledgment, I will receive several free lightmeters." 14 June 1970 * Brief ALS, written in the space below Bernstein's letter to him: "I have no opinion. There is too much I dont know. You must ask your agent, lawyer, or rabbi." 1 April no year.
