Seligmann (1900-1962) was a Swiss-born Surrealist painter, illustrator, printmaker and writer. He is known for his paintings and drawings that explored mythological and spiritual themes. Born in Basel, to a wealthy Jewish family, he studied philosophy in both Basel and at the University of Geneva. During this time, he was exposed to the Dada and Surrealist movements and was significantly influenced by their ideas. In 1924, he moved to Paris and studied painting with Fernand Léger and André Lhote.

In 1927, Seligmann was one of the founding members of the Surrealist group in Paris. He was a close friend of André Breton, the leader of the group, and they collaborated on several projects. He also worked with Max Ernst and other leading Surrealists. In 1940, Seligmann moved to New York to escape the Nazi regime, where he continued to create artwork in addition to his writing.
