L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) and Jack Snow (1907-1956)

Three of Justin Schiller's Books.

1) The New Wizard of Oz. Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1903. Second edition, mixed state, quarto; with the illustration of the Cowardly Lion wiping his tears with his tail on page 68, no advertisements, and two dates listed on the copyright notice; with 16 full-color plates and numerous text illustrations by W.W. Denslow; bound in Bienvenue and Schmidt's binding B: full green cloth stamped with black and orange, illustrated endpapers, with the "New" dropped from the front cover and "The" in non-serif lettering at top of spine, with the crow's eye printed in orange, and the period after "Baum"; two envelopes, each containing a Schiller bookplate, laid-in at rear; (lacking jacket; scattered offsetting, occasional minor stains; extremities rubbed, one or two small stains, front hinge tender, just over-opened in a few places); 9 x 6 ¾ in.

2) The Patchwork Girl of Oz. Chicago: The Reilly & Britton, Co., 1913. First edition, first state; with the "to" on page 35 printed within the red "C" in "CHAP. THREE"; illustrated in color throughout by John R. Neill; Bienvenue and Schmidt's binding A: light green cloth stamped in dark green, red and yellow, illustrated endpapers, the publisher's spine imprint reading "Reilly & Britton"; envelope containing Schiller's bookplate laid in at front (lacking jacket; occasional corner creases, small stains, thumbing, short marginal tear to page 210; touch cocked, lightly rubbed); 9 x 6 ½ in. 

3) Snow's Who's Who in Oz. Chicago: The Reilly & Lee Co., 1954. First edition, quarto; signed and inscribed to Schiller, "all the best wishes and love of his friend," dated 7 May 1955 by author Jack Snow and "with best wishes" by illustrator Frank Kranmer, as well as signed by Schiller on the ownership leaf, with numerous markings and annotations by him throughout, including writing his name and Snow's below the "J" entry, checking off every title at rear and adding some details to the biography section as well as the endpaper maps; bound in yellow gilt-stamped publisher's cloth, illustrated endpapers; in the original dust jacket (price clipped, few short tears; occasional stains, thumbing; over-opened in a few places); 9 x 6 ½ in.
