First edition, first printing, quarto; printed on the first state multi-color card stock gatherings, a very early copy according to Bienvenue, with "Toto on" on page 34, the numeral on page 121, and numeral & caption on page 129 in perfect type, 2pp. advertisement at rear listing the Laura Bancroft titles and the four others by Baum; illustrated throughout by Neill; variant A binding: light green pictorial buckram, with the illustration on the rear board and the spine imprint reading "Reilly & Britton" in upper- and lowercase letters, tan pictorial endpapers printed in red and black, upper edge tinted dark blue (lacking jacket; light fading to colored leaves as usual, small hole to pp. 13-14 repaired with tape, scattered short marginal tears, occasional corner creases, two ownership inscriptions at front; light soiling and small stains to cloth, corners rubbed, lower board a touch bowed, lower hinge starting); 9 x 6 ½ in. 

Baum's fifth Oz book introduces characters who would become reader favorites including, The Shaggy Man, Button-Bright, and Polychrome, the Rainbow's Daughter.
