L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) & John R. Neill (1877-1943), illus.

The Emerald City of Oz.

Chicago: The Reilly & Britton Co., 1910.
First edition, second printing, quarto; publisher's advertisement on ownership page verso listing five Baum titles; 16 full-color plates with metallic green ink embellishments and numerous text illustrations by Neill; bound in binding B: green cloth, illustrated label to front board, pictorial endpapers printed in orange and black, spine stamped in black with vignette of rabbit soldier embellished with silver and the imprint reading "Reilly & Britton"; in the publisher's pictorial dust jacket reproducing the new cover label illustration (section of loss to front panel, smaller tears and losses, light soiling; pp. 103-106 detached, occasional tiny stains; front label lightly rubbed, front board a touch bowed, two inked ownership inscriptions); 9 x 6 ½ in.

Finding himself pressured to write an Oz book each year, Baum decided to conclude the series with this title by making his fairyland invisible to all those who live outside its domain. As an intended finale, this book was the most elaborately produced in the Oz series, featuring plates embellished with costly metallic ink. In fact, the series continued with many more books. Baum authored nine others before his death in 1919, including the posthumously published The Magic of Oz and Glinda of Oz.

Bienvenue and Schmidt pp. 45-47; Hanff & Greene VI.

From the Michael Charles Collection of L. Frank Baum and Oz books.
