For this five day show on "French thinking" as expressed in books and the media, Colin illustrates a sky-high stack of books, the Eiffel Tower ( the French emblem representative of the location and the nationalistic theme of the show), and telephone / telegraph wires to represent the media, whose magazines would also have been on display. Surrounding the image of the Eiffel Tower is a second frame, slightly askew, symbolizing, perhaps, offset printing or perhaps just enlivening the image. The idea of stacking objects vertically is one of the visual tricks Colin often used when employed to advertise commercial products. He used this device in 1930 when he depicted a clown carrying a stack of Odeon records, and he would do it again in 1937 for the French National Tobacco Company, with a groom carrying boxes of cigars and cigarettes.
