(LABOR.) William O. Cushing; and George F. Root. Our Protective Union.

UNRECORDED PRE-FIRE CHICAGO IMPRINT (LABOR.) William O. Cushing; and George F. Root. Our Protective Union. 3 pages, 13 x 9 3/4 inches, on 2 detached sheets; minimal wear. Chicago: Root & Cady, 1866

  • Notes: An early trade union anthem. The words are by the Rev. William Orcutt Cushing (1823-1902), a Unitarian hymn writer in the New York area. He may have been inspired by the 1866 founding of the short-lived National Labor Union, the nation''s first labor federation. The song contains 4 short verses and a chorus: "Together, then Hurrah! Hurrah for free communion; we''ll meet oppression, greed and wrong, with our protective union." It appears to be completely unknown today. The title is listed among Root''s works in a website dedicated to his prolific career, but the lyricist is there unknown and no copies are traced; he submitted it for copyright in 1894. Also notable as an unrecorded pre-fire Chicago imprint. None traced in OCLC or at auction.
