LAFAYETTE, GILBERT DU MOTIER; MARQUIS DE. Letter Signed, "Lafayette," as Major General, to Brigadier General George Weedon,

LAFAYETTE, GILBERT DU MOTIER; MARQUIS DE. Letter Signed, "Lafayette," as Major General, to Brigadier General George Weedon, asking Weedon to command the militia at Gloucester across from Yorktown, and requesting boats for Washington's army at Head of Elk. 4 pages, 8vo, on a single folded sheet; minor wear at folds, minor foxing. Williamsburg [VA], 11 September 1781

  • Notes: This letter established Weedon in command at Gloucester, where he played an important role in the Siege of Yorktown. "A camp of about one thousand militia will be formed at Glocester, which I would be happy if you were to command. . . . We have not one ounce [of flour] at present, nor do I see without great private exertions any prospect of a speedy supply. It may be well enough to have loaded and in readiness what vessels may not be wanted for Gen. Washington. I mean those in the Rappohannock. Their cargo should be flour." Lafayette also reiterates an earlier request "to forward all proper vessels to the Head of Elk," or Elkton MD, where Washington was en route. Abstracted in Lafayette in the Age of the American Revolution, IV:512; quoted in Ward, Duty, Honor or Country, page 214.
