LAM, WIFREDO. Osun. Bronze sculpture, 16x8 inches; Signed and Numbered (13/50) on the base. Np, 1977

  • Notes: Wilfredo Lam (1902-1982) is one of the best-known Cuban artists of the 20th century. After studying in Spain and France, and working in the atelier of Picasso, he returned to Cuba where he became interested in the images of Lucumi (also called Santeria or Voudou), the transplanted religious beliefs derived from the Yorubas of West Africa.
The subject of this bronze, Osun, is one of the most powerful "orishas," or messengers of God to the Yoruba people. Osun is a compassionate female deity and represents the river or continuity of life.
