LAURIE and CRUTCHLEY . Fredonia or the United States of North America: including also Cabotia, or the Canadian Provinces [etc.].

LAURIE and CRUTCHLEY . Fredonia or the United States of North America: including also Cabotia, or the Canadian Provinces [etc.]. 25-section engraved case map, 670x990 mm overall; hand-colored in outline; mild offsetting; original linen backing; matted and framed. With original case in a sleeve attached to the back of the frame; case is in poor condition. Wheat, TM 393. London: Laurie, 1830

  • Notes: first edition of this hugely important mapping of the United States or Fredonia, based on the observations of Lewis and Clark, the 1810 Mexico map by Arrowsmith and the 1822 Long map. Escalante's route West is clearly and accurately noted and Long's route is also noted. Published by both Cruchley and Laurie on 14 August 1830. The map was reissued in 1832, 1833, 1834, 1836, 1839, 1848, and 1849. We trace no copy of the First Edition of either the Laurie or Crutchley issues having come to auction.
The title of the map as Fredonia is explained in an engraved note on the map which is found only on the Laurie issue, "Fredonia or Fredon is a name originally proposed by the Hon. Saml. L. Mitchill in 1801, and since adopted, as a broad and universal appellation, to designate the territory of the 'United States of North America.' Hence Fredonian or Frede, a native of, and Fredish, of or belonging to the same territory. Thus are obviated the vague distinctions of Anglo-Americans, or simply Americans, United States' men &c, and by this generic distinction the country and people are distinguished geographically, from those of the Canadian territories, of the 'United Mexican States,' the 'United Central States,' &c."
