  • Notes: first edition. The civil engineer Cubitt (1785-1861) "invented the treadmill as a method of employing human labour to grind corn, in the same way as animal power was used at the time. This invention was rapidly adopted in the principal gaols of the United Kingdom, the first being erected in Bury St Edmunds in 1819; later sites included Bridewell Hospital in London" (ODNB).
