  • Notes: Livingston was an important American jurist. Although he later served as Secretary of State, he was best known for drafting a radical new civil code for Louisiana, heavily influenced by the ideas of Jeremy Bentham, with an emphasis on rehabilitation rather than punishment. Provenance: Swann sale, 18 June 1992, lot 330. Sabin 41614; no other copies known at auction since 1982.
