  • Notes: John H. Remsen (circa 1770-1798) was a New York lawyer and notary public who also served as private secretary to New York governor John Jay. This volume records work done and fees charged by Remsen on hundreds of cases at the Mayor''s Court, the Federal District Court, and the New York Supreme Court. These cases were initiated from September 1795 to September 1796, with charges for a few accrued in 1797 and 1798. The volume includes a full alphabetical index of clients. Among the more noteworthy cases, Remsen represented the Bank of the United States in a protracted suit against Tory publisher James Rivington (pages 169 and 170). He also represented a group led by John Jay and George Clinton in three cases (pages 12, 69, and 74).
