(LEGAL TRANSCRIPT.) Group of 4 notebooks from an attorney or court, the transcript of testimony in the case of a runaway slave accused of murder Small folio, original salmon and blue paper-covered stiff wrappers with handwritten notes on covers; average 60-80 pages each; marked "B," "D," "E," and "G," with other cases mentioned between depositions; water staining in lower margins, affecting text; hole through final four leaves of book "E." CONDI-TION VARIES. SHOULD BE EXAMINED. [Providence, Rhode Island], 1853-55 E600/800 Fascinating, convoluted case of a colored man arrested for murder in Uxbridge, Rhode Island. The man, Charles C. Scott, claimed he was a runaway slave; other unsubstantiated testimony describes him as a murderer. These books seem to be contemporary transcripts from testimony and depositions taken stenographically. Among the attorneys involved: George Taft, prosecuting on behalf of "slave-catcher" Scott Seagram; and defense attorney Mr. W. Noyes (we find no first name). Book "E" states the case went to the Grand Jury and Petit Jury, Court of Magistrates in Providence, but we find no record of it. Old Rhode Island names are involved on both sides: Aldrich, Seagram, Taft, Bliss et al. The records do not resolve the case; notebook "B" refers to continued testimony in notebook "A," not present.
