LEIBOVITZ, ANNIE (1949- ) "John Lennon and Yoko Ono, New York."

LEIBOVITZ, ANNIE (1949- )
"John Lennon and Yoko Ono, New York." Cibachrome print, 12 inches (30.5 cm.) square, with Leibovitz's signature, title, date and edition notations 4/40, in ink, on recto. 1980

  • Notes: John Lennon and Yoko Ono were one of the most notable couples of the twentieth century. They met in 1968, when Lennon was associated with the Beatles and Ono was a well-known performance artist. They produced many albums and videos in addition to publicly campaigning for world peace.

On their honeymoon, March 20, 1969, they hosted a week-long "bed in" at the presidential suite of the Amsterdam Hilton. Although the newlyweds were ridiculed and mocked by the media, they spent a week vociferously protesting the Vietnam War. They then headed to Montreal, inhabiting a suite at the stately Queen Elizabeth Hotel on May 26, 1969, to stage their second weeklong bed-in for peace. The couple was no less arty and active throughout the1970s.

In 1980 an editor at Rolling Stone sent Leibovitz on assignment to photograph Lennon and Ono, who had recently released their album "Double Fantasy." It was the last photograph made of Lennon. Several hours later, he was fatally shot while entering his NYC apartment building.
