Leighton, Clare (1898-1989) Lambing.

Leighton, Clare (1898-1989)
Lambing.

1935.

Wood engraving on Japan paper, signed, titled and numbered 35 of an edition of 50 in pencil in the bottom margin, a nice impression, matted and framed, 6 1/2 x 4 3/4 in.

Leighton is best known for her vivid wood engravings, often depicting rural work as in this bucolic image. Seated on the steps of a small shed, a farmer offers a new lamb milk from a bottle while a boy looks on. In the foreground sit a contented pile of ewes and infant lambs, while the shadowy sheepdog keeps watch.
