This early watercolor is a self portrait of the young artist with a friend. Foster is a Detroit artist who studied at the Art School of the Detroit Society of the Arts. He taught at Cass Technical High School where he was himself a student, and in 1958 later founded the Contemporary Studio, with artists Charles McGee and Henri Umbaii King. He is best known for his mural of Frederick Douglass in the downtown branch of the Detroit Public Library.
