Ury (1861-1931) was raised in Prussia an Berlin before moving to Düsseldorf to study painting at the Kunstakademie. His first show in 1889 was not well-received, but after joining the Munich Secession in 1893 and then showing with the Berlin Secession in 1915 and 1922, his landscapes, urban landscapes (such as the current lot), with pastels in particular, and nocturnes rapidly gained popularity. He is especially acclaimed for his use of luminous colors, and his focus on the play of light in urban street scenes.
