"POLLY [GEORGE ELIOT] IS MISERABLE OVER A NEW NOVEL" LEWES, GEORGE HENRY. Autograph Letter Signed, "G.H. Lewes," to Thomas A. Trollope ("My dear Trollope"), sending New Years wishes to him and his daughter, stating that he has secured Oscar Browning to review his history of Florence, asking about articles he is expecting from him, and mentioning that Polly [George Eliot] is laboring over a new novel while he himself is working on a new History of Philosophy. 2 pages, 8vo, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet, "Fortnightly Review" stationery, blue paper; vertical lines drawn through text of first page, note in ink at upper left: "1866 but post marked 1865," pin holes at upper left, horizontal folds. [London], 1 January 186[5]

  • Notes: ". . . I have at last after endless applications succeeded in getting I hope a good man to review your Florence (Oscar Browning of Eton). . . . [N]o one that I would trust the book to had the requisite knowledge.
    ". . . Polly is miserable over a new novel & I am happy over the very hard work of a new edition of my History of Philosophy, which will almost be a new book, so great are the changes & additions. . . ."
    Thomas Adolphus Trollope (1810–1892) was an author, like his younger brother, Athony Trollope.
