(LEWIS & CLARK.) Gass, Patrick. A Journal of the Voyages and Travels of a Corps of Discovery. 12mo, publisher's 1/2 calf, very worn with loss to the paper covering the boards and the leather tips; lacks the front free endpaper, title page torn with loss, browned throughout; early owner's ink scribblings on the rear free endpaper and pastedown (including a note admonishing those who would steal the book). Pittsburgh, 1807
- Notes: first edition. A cornerstone of any Americana collection, Gass's Journal was the earliest first-hand account of the Expedition to be published. It was also the only authentic source for detailed information on the travels until the official History was published in 1814. Largely because of this delay, Gass's Journal became instantly popular going through numerous editions. The First Edition, however, has become increasingly scarce, particularly in good condition and in the publisher's binding. "The first printing of a journal by a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition"--The Literature of the Lewis and Clark Expedition 3.1; Graff 1516; Wagner-Camp 6:1; Howes G77.
