(LEWIS & CLARK.) Prospectus for the ill-fated official report by Lewis, and 3 other newspapers relating to the expedition.

(LEWIS & CLARK.) Prospectus for the ill-fated official report by Lewis, and 3 other newspapers relating to the expedition. Each 4 pages, about 20½ x 13½ inches, on one folding sheet; generally minor wear. Boston and Philadelphia, 1807

  • Notes: Report on a dinner given in honor of Meriwether Lewis in Washington. Includes an ode written by popular poet Joel Barlow on the occasion. In the Columbian Centinel, page 2, column 2. Boston, 24 January 1807.

"Prospectus of Lewis and Clark's Tour to the Pacific Ocean." The unauthorized account by expedition member Patrick Gass had appeared earlier that year, so Lewis hoped to quickly gather subscriptions for his official version. The prospectus here fills almost a full column on the rear page, and is signed in type by Lewis; it also appeared in the 1 August issue of the Port Folio magazine. The project was stalled by his writer's block and terminated by his death in October 1809; an edited official version of the report did not appear until 1814. In the Aurora General Advertiser, Philadelphia, 28 July 1807.

An abbreviated advertisement of the above: "A prospectus of the above Tour and map may be seen at the bookstore of Andrews and Cummings." In the Columbian Centinel, page 4, 4th column, 8 and 15 August 1807.
