(LEWIS & CLARK.) The Travels of Capts. Lewis & Clarke. Folding map [a supplied contemporary map by Arrowsmith and not the original map found with this work], 5 plates. 12mo, modern cloth; foxing, restoration to the map. w. j. holliday's copy with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Philadelphia: Hubbard Lester, 1809

  • Notes: first edition of the so-called apocrypha. The absence of the original map was apparently unnoticed by Holliday. The original map depicts the region from the Mississippi west, while the present example, with a different title, shows all of North America. "The preparation of Lewis and Clark's authorized account of their expedition encountered a series of delays... In the meantime, curiosity continued unabated... In 1809 the above curious work appeared, implying the sanction of the Government and purporting to contain everything known about the country and the expedition... 'this wretched meretricious compilation' as Elliott Coues called it, was for a time a major source of information on the Far West"--Wagner-Camp 8:1; The Literature of the Lewis and Clark Expedition 4a.1; Howes L321; Streeter Sale 3122; Holliday Sale, lot 669 [this copy].
