(LEWIS & CLARK.) Thomas Jefferson. The first official public report on the completion of the Lewis & Clark expedition, in an issue of The Commonwealth, Volume II, issue 18. 4 pages, 12 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches, on one folding sheet; stitch holes, 3/4-inch repaired tear affecting four words. Pittsburgh, PA, 17 December 1806

  • Notes: Lewis & Clark's Corps of Discovery concluded their journey in St. Louis on 23 September 1806 and sent their initial report to President Jefferson. The first 2 1/2 pages are devoted to the president's 2 December 1806 State of the Union address to Congress, which includes the first official public notice of the completion of the expedition: "The expedition of Messrs. Lewis and Clarke, for exploring the river Missouri, and the best communication from that to the Pacific ocean, has had all the success which could have been expected. They have traced the Missouri nearly to its source, descended the Columbia to the Pacific Ocean. . . and it is but justice to say that Messrs. Lewis and Clarke, and their brave companions, have, by this arduous service, deserved well of their country." This appearance of the address is particularly interesting, as it was printed in the frontier city of Pittsburgh from whence the expedition was launched.
