LEWIS, SINCLAIR. Autograph Letter Signed, "Red," to journalist Lloyd Downs Lewis ("Dear Lloyd"), praising his letters and books, observing that [Harold] Stassen is the best [candidate in primary election for Republican nomination in 1948 presidential race], announcing the possibility of visiting Chicago, and remarking on the success of [his own stay in] Duluth, MN. 2 pages, 8vo, "Hotel Algonquin" stationery, written on recto and verso of a single sheet; horizontal folds. "God but you write wonderful letters (as well as books)! Your last was an especial joy.
"I don't know about Stassen, but certainly he seems the best in the field.
"It may be possible that I shall see you and Kathryn . . . I'll be leaving here about November & cruising about the middle West, & maybe I'll be in Chicago.
"Duluth is a great success, 'tho I never plan to be there except in the beautifully cool summers."
Lewis lived in Duluth, MN, for a few years beginning in 1944, during which time he worked on his novels Cass Timberlane (1945) and Kingsblod Royal (1947).
