LEWIS W. HINE (1874-1940)
A Corner in the Italian Market District, Chicago. 1911.
Silver print, the image measuring 4¼x6 3/8 inches (10.8x16.2 cm.), with Hines's Interpretive Photography, Hastings-on-Hudson stamp (twice), his Hine Photo Company stamp with the set and image numbers, the stamped title, and the date and numeric notations in pencil in an unknown hand, on verso.

  • Condition: Lewis Hine's vintage photograph A Corner in the Italian Market District, Chicago, 1911 is overall in very good condition. The tones of the print are rich and varied, with plenty of detail and dimension.

Under close examination, the print evidences a few surface inconsistencies, which are primarily located around the image area, and as such do not detract from the overall composition. The most visible ones include a paper clip mark on the upper right edge and a vertical circa 1-inch hard crease along the upper left corner. While visible, they are not overly distracting when viewing the work in typical conditions. Under closer examination in raking light, we can also notice a few scattered specs of period retouching. They remain discreet. Finally, there is a tiny hard crease on the extreme tip of the lower right corner. Here as well, it remains unobtrusive.

The print has no margins, and a few minuscule chips with loss may be found, and more specifically on the tip of the lower left corner, and on the extreme upper left edge where the extreme upper left corner is missing.

The verso is lightly age-darkened but clean, with Hines's Interpretive Photography, Hastings-on-Hudson stamp (twice), his Hine Photo Company stamp with the set and image numbers, the stamped title, and the date and numeric notations in pencil in an unknown hand.
