LEWIS W. HINE (1874-1940) Construction worker welding steel girders on the Empire State Building, New York City.

LEWIS W. HINE (1874-1940)
Construction worker welding steel girders on the Empire State Building, New York City. Silver print, the image measuring 7½x9½ inches (19.1x24.1 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with two Brown Bothers stamps and notations including one for Scientific American in pencil on verso. 1930; printed circa 1950s

  • Condition: Lewis Hine's study of a construction worker on the Empire State Building, with a view of the Chrysler Building in the background, is in very good condition. The surface is overall clean and bright, and the print with a range of creamy warm highlights and dark charcoal grays. The double weight paper is lustrous.

Upon close inspection there are just a couple very minor and faint surface imperfections visible in strong, raking light. A piece of rectilinear brown paper tape applied to verso has left a couple very slight ripples at the far left center area of the image, but this is not distracting. The far lower right corner is creased, but this is mostly in the thin margins.

Print verso is very faintly soiled. With various numeric notations and the notation Scientific American. Also with two Brown Brothers labels.
