LEWIS W. HINE (1874-1940) Two women at work in a factory.

LEWIS W. HINE (1874-1940)
Two women at work in a factory. Silver print, the image measuring 5x7 inches (12.7x17.8 cm.), with Hine's Interpretive Photography, Hastings-on-Hudson stamp and a caption and numeric notations in pencil on verso. Circa 1910

  • Condition: Lewis Hine's photograph of two women working in a factory is overall in very good condition. The print, with compelling detail as well as a range of deep blacks and grays to milky whites, is both clear and bright.

Under close inspection in strong, raking light the surface of the print evidences some imperfections, which are primarily confined to the edges. These include: a faint linear surface impression across the image in the lower quadrant, a few expertly and neatly repaired spots and creases around the image area, more precisely on the bottom edge and upper right corner. None of them are visible under normal viewing conditions. They are all typical to Hine's prints.

Also, the print has narrow black margins which evidence a few superficial tiny scattered chips and losses around the edges.

A compelling example of Hine's imagery of women at work.
