  • Notes: Edward S. Morris (1830-1890) was senator of the county of Sinoe in Liberia in the 1850s. In this letter he discusses the fate of "Mr. H.," as well as the funding for the erection of a monument (probably for Lott Carey in Philadelphia). As a result of a letter written by Morris to President Lincoln in 1860, the country of Liberia was formally recognized by the United States.
