- Notes: When the British set fire to Washington in 1814, the original library of Congress was destroyed. Jefferson offered his library to replace the one lost for whatever price Congress determined. The first report, dated 28 November 1814, presents the bill to the Senate to purchase the 6487 volumes for $23,950. The second report, dated 20 February 1815, requests additional funds from the Senate for a library room and transportation costs.
