LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. A bound compilation of political speeches and tracts, including Lincoln's inaugural and Cooper Union speeches.

LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. A bound compilation of political speeches and tracts, including Lincoln's inaugural and Cooper Union speeches. 128 pamphlets in one volume. 8vo, contemporary 1/2 calf, moderate wear; intermittent foxing; early Australian bookplate and later notes on front pastedown. Vp, 1856-61

  • Notes: A bound compilation of political speeches and tracts by various authors, beginning with "President Lincoln's Inaugural Address" (Monaghan 101) and also including his famous Cooper Union speech, "The Republican Party Vindicated; The Demands of the South Explained. Speech . . . at the Cooper Institute, New York City, February 27, 1860" (Monaghan 55). Many other items relate to the 1860 presidential campaign, most notably McKee Dunn's "The Republican Party and the Republican Candidate for the Presidency," Elbridge Spaulding's "The Republican Platform," and Elihu Washburne's "Abraham Lincoln: His Personal History and Public Record" (Monaghan 36, 82, 87). Arrangement is roughly alphabetical, with the great majority in English, but the volume closes with 19 pamphlets in German, including Lincoln's Cooper Union speech translated into German (Monaghan 3741). Other topics are well-represented, not surprisingly including many on slavery and the impending secession crisis, but also two on Mormon polygamy: Gooch's "Polygamy in Utah" and Thayer's "The Polygamy Question" (Flake 3612, 8888). James Dixon's "The Amistad Claim" is another highlight. The pamphlets lean heavily toward the Republican side of the aisle, but not exclusively. Other authors include Seward, Sumner, and Schurz. Almost all of the pamphlets are dated 1860, with a handful from 1856 to 1859, and just the one inaugural speech from 1861. Inventory available.
