LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. Autograph Endorsement Signed, "A.Lincoln," as President, on the terminal page of a letter to Attorney General Edward Bates: "Make the appointment." Additionally endorsed by Bates on same page, in pencil. The letter, from former Attorney General of Missouri James B. Gardenhire, requesting a brigadier general's commission for Thomas L. Price. 2 1/2 pages, 8vo, written on a single folded sheet, ruled paper. [Washington], 6 December 1861

  • Notes: Thomas L. Price (1809-1870) developed Missouri railroads and served as a Representative from that state in 1862-63; despite his status as a major slaveholder (he owned more than 70), he remained loyal to the Union, becoming a prominent War Democrat in the reorganization of the Missouri Democratic party.
John Frémont, in command of the Department of the West, rewarded Price for his loyalty by appointing him brigadier general. On November 2, 1861, Lincoln removed Frémont from his command after the general's controversial order to emancipate slaves in Missouri, a move Lincoln feared would draw all the loyal slave-holding border states into the Confederate fold. Gardenhire asserted that Frémont had given "the assurance that the President would confirm the appointment. This has not yet been done, though Genl. Price has, for more than two months, been in command of the United States troops at Jefferson City." Lincoln, not wishing to ruffle any more feathers in the shaky border state of Missouri, ordered the commission.
