Springfield, MA, 2 November 1863 to 30 July 1864

  • Notes: The President's address at Gettysburg appears in the 20 November 1863 issue, the first date that it was published. As usual, it appears at the end of Edward Everett's much longer address with little commentary. More unusual is a note the following day, most likely by editor Josiah G. Holland: "Surprisingly fine as Mr. Everett's oration was in the Gettysburg consecration, the rhetorical honors on the occasion were won by President Lincoln. His little speech is a perfect gem; deep in feeling, compact in thought and expression, and tasteful and elegant in every word and comma. . . . Turn back and read it over--it will well repay study as a model speech." Most newspapers failed to recognize the importance of the Gettysburg Address at first, and the Chicago Times dismissed its 'silly, flat, and dishwatery utterances.' However, the Springfield Daily Republican knew immediately that something special had happened.
