LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

VERY EARLY PRINTING OF THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation. 2 printed pages, 13 x 8 1/4 inches, on one folding sheet; stab holes in margins, minor soiling and a spot of dampstaining along the lower margin; signed in type by Lincoln and William H. Seward, with a printed transmittal note on second page addressed in manuscript and signed by William H. Seward as Secretary of State. [Washington], 3 January 1863

  • Notes: The fourth separately printed edition of the final Emancipation Proclamation, preceded only by a virtually unobtainable preliminary printing, a newspaper broadside, and a nearly identical State Department printing which lacks the Seward transmittal letter.
Eberstadt located 4 copies of this printing, but only one still retained the attached transmittal letter, which is dated 3 January 1863. He describes it as "a circular printed for dissemination to the foreign service posts of the Department of State," and hypothesizes that it was printed on or about 5 January 1863, four days after the proclamation was first issued. See Eberstadt, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation 11. This copy was issued to Robert C. Kirk of Ohio, then serving as Minister to Argentina. No printing this early has been seen at auction since Eberstadt's third edition appeared at the Jay Snider sale in 2005.
