  • Notes: As the War was winding to a close, Lincoln received and granted numerous requests to pardon captured officers and soldiers, as per the terms of his 1863 Proclamation of Amnesty, an integral part to his plan for Reconstruction. Under the Oath, the Confederates swore to "faithfully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the union of the States thereunder; and... abide by and faithfully support all acts of Congress passed during the existing rebellion with reference to slaves..."
