(LINCOLN, ABRAHAM.) Manuscript record book of the Nancy Hanks Lincoln Burial Ground Commission.

(LINCOLN, ABRAHAM.) Manuscript record book of the Nancy Hanks Lincoln Burial Ground Commission. 31 manuscript pages of minutes (including 4 blanks) and [31] pages of financial records. Folio, original calf gilt, worn, lacking backstrip; numerous blank leaves torn out, otherwise minor wear to contents. Indiana, 1907-25

  • Notes: Nancy Hanks Lincoln (1784-1818) died at Little Pigeon Creek in what is now Lincoln City, IN when her son Abraham was only nine years old. The Lincolns moved on to Illinois in 1830, leaving her grave untended. After decades of neglect, the Nancy Hanks Lincoln Burial Ground Commission was founded in 1907. They met at various Indiana locations, and soon turned the site into a proper fenced park with driveways and running water. Only 3 commission meetings are recorded after 1917, with the last entry being a detailed 1925 inventory of all property relating to the burial ground, including 19 1/2 acres of land, an auditorium, and several maintenance buildings. The financial accounts cover the 1917-25 period and are much more detailed, listing payments to the site's custodian and laborers, as well as repairs and supplies. The site is now part of the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, established in 1962.
