(LINCOLN, ABRAHAM.) [Maurer, Louis; artist.] The Rail Candidate.

(LINCOLN, ABRAHAM.) [Maurer, Louis; artist.] The Rail Candidate. Lithograph, 13 x 17 3/4 inches; minor foxing and dampstaining, mat toning, two holes punched in top margin; mount remnants on verso. New York: Currier & Ives, 1860

  • Notes: Candidate Lincoln rides uncomfortably on the Republican Party platform rail supported by Horace Greeley and an African-American laborer, both intended to discredit Lincoln among more conservative voters. "The artist's own political opinions did not enter into the matter. Mr. Maurer himself voted for Lincoln"--Peters, Currier & Ives, 1674 and page 84. Reilly 1860-31.
