(LINCOLN, ABRAHAM.) Storer, George W. Letter describing a mass gathering of the Wide Awakes.

(LINCOLN, ABRAHAM.) Storer, George W. Letter describing a mass gathering of the Wide Awakes. Autograph Letter Signed to wife Mary G. Storer in Portsmouth, NH. 4 pages, 8 x 5 inches, on one sheet plus a postscript on a small additional slip; minimal wear. With original stamped and postmarked envelope. New York, 3 October 1860

  • Notes: Admiral George Washington Storer (1789-1864) of Portsmouth, NH was near the end of his distinguished naval career when he wrote this letter on a visit to New York. There he witnessed a parade of militant Lincoln supporters: "On my return from Brooklyn this evening, when part of the way up 5th Avenue, the omnibus was stopped by a police force across the street & not allowed to proceed any farther in that direction. . . . About thirty thousand Wide Awakes are parading the streets with their Lincoln & Hamblin banners, each one dress''d in oil skin cap & short cloaks & all bearing torches upon staffs above their heads. They tell me the procession will be six miles long. They certainly make a splendid & brilliant appearance." Storer was impressed with the city as a whole, explaining that he had "not told one half of the sights this unsophisticated New Hampshire Yankee has seen in this village" and joking that "I have a great mind to buy this place (N.Y.) & have it moved to Portsmouth, that all our folks at home might see it."
