"Departure of the President Elect" for Washington, in his hometown newspaper.

Springfield, IL, 12 February 1861
4 pages, 23¼ x 16¼ inches, on one folding sheet; disbound, minimal dampstaining.

The Daily Illinois State Register was one of Abraham Lincoln's home town newspapers. This issue has a paragraph on "The Departure of the President Elect" on page 3: "A large crowd of his personal and political admirers assembled at the depot to bid him God-speed on his journey to the seat of government. As he entered the car he was greeted with three cheers, which he acknowledged in a few appropriate remarks that were made inaudible to a large portion of the crowd by the incorrigible hissing of the locomotive."

The Register was a Democratic paper. On the facing page is a lead editorial on "Mr. Lincoln as a Prophet." Examining his declaration that "The Union cannot permanently endure part slave and part free," they hoped that he was not a prophet.
