LINNAEUS TRIPE (1822-1902)
A series of three images of the Elliot Marbles, including two on one mount. 1858.
Albumen prints, the images measuring 7½x4½ to 11½x9 inches (19.1x11.4 to 29.2x23 cm.), the mounts 13x17¾ inches (33x45.1 cm.).

Provenance
The Collection of Dr. James and Debra Pearl

Excavated from the Buddhist stupa at Amaravati in south India in 1845 by Walter Elliot, the marble sculptures were acquired by the Government Central Museum in Madras in 1853. This is where Tripe photographed the collection.

  • Condition: This series of three images of the Elliot Marbles, 1858, by Tripe is in nearly excellent condition. The tones of the works remain rich and contrasty, with plenty of detail and texture throughout.

Under close examination in raking light, we can notice a thin diagonal line on the upper middle quadrant above the marble which has been neatly repaired. While apparent, it remains unobtrusive and does not impact the beautiful composition.

The mount is slightly rippled and age-darkened on its outer edges. The verso is clean.

The other two prints mounted on the same mount don't evidence any flaws on their surfaces. The mount is also slightly rippled and age-darkened on its outer edges. The verso is clean.
