LISZT, FRANZ. Autograph Letter Signed, "FLiszt," to an unnamed publisher recipient ("Dear Friend"), in German and French, sending his manuscripts [not present], as well as those of Mr. [Bedrich] Smetana [not present], recommending that the latter be quickly published, giving instructions for the publication of his works including the three fantasies and three nocturnes dedicated to Princess Marie Wittgenstein, mentioning that he has changed the title of a work to "Symphonische Fantasie," requesting that the manuscripts be kept secret until given further word, responding to a request to interpret a paragraph by [Niels?] Gade, and requesting a copy of the work he gave to Madame Moscheles last summer because the duchess of Orlean wishes to hear it. 4 pages, small 4to, written on a single folded sheet; evenly toned, faint offsetting throughout, folds. Weimar, 22 January [18]49

  • Notes: ". . . [I]t will probably be necessary to have the three nocturnes as well as the three fantasy pieces--which are dedicated to Princess Marie Wittgenstein--copied over before you give it to the engraver. Please employ only a most exact and skilled copyist who neither misses the spacing nor neglects the various signs. . . . The title of the 'Fantasia Quasi Sonata' has been changed by me. . . . 'Symphonische Fantasie' seems to me more reserved. Should the lengths of my works frighten you or should you not be eager to publish so many of my adumbrations, I beg you dear friend to lay aside all those and to not mention anything about my having sent them, in which case I would like to send them to Hurtels together with 'Glanes de Woronice.' . . . There are things which can be understood among Gentlemen that need no explanation.
". . . [O]f course you will keep both manuscripts in your room, not telling anyone about them until I let you know of my further disposition. Of Gade we have not heard a word in Weimar . . . it would be therefore impossible for me to interpret the idea of Gade's paragraph.
". . . [P]lease be good enough to ask Mme. Moscheles to send . . . a copy of the pieces which I gave her last summer . . . . The duchess of Orleans would like to hear it and I don't remember a single note of it. . . ."
