Opportunity (published by the National Urban League) and Crisis (published by the NAACP) were the two main sources for a healthy mixture of African American culture, social issues and politics for a good portion of the twentieth century. Crisis published its first numbers in 1910 and Opportunity in 1923. Together, these two publications gave voice to core issues in the African American community as well as introducing that community to the artwork and photography of some of the 20th century''s best artists. Inside their covers were writings by Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, W. E. B. Du Bois, and a list too long to put here.
